Our Story

The idea of a church meeting in a movie theater got some raised eyebrows, snickers and an occasional comment of “That’s cool!”   On April 17, 2005 The Sanctuary opened in a theater near you, but not without a committed group of people who desired to live out the hope of Jesus, together.  It was an interesting experience opening a church in the middle of the Voorhees, NJ marketplace-Interacting with others who were not “churchy”, set up and tear down in time for the first showing of the latest Indy Film, and encountering the temptation brought on by the smell of movie popcorn.

Since that time of beginning, we moved to a local elementary school in Voorhees, just down the road as a matter of fact.  Meeting now in E.T. Hamilton School has been another logistical growing experience. But along with the logistical learning, God has taught our faith community about being devoted to Him, dedicated to others and directed to serve and that’s who we are!

A community of followers of Jesus Christ committed to live by faith, to be known by love, and to be a voice of hope. The name of our community points to the reason we gather-A Sanctuary.  It’s a place consecrated to God for the purpose of worship.  It is also known to be a place of refuge and safety.   Our community is just that, but it's found in the people who meet together and not just the place. We welcome people from all walks of life, regardless of where they are in their spiritual journey who are learning to be devoted to God, dedicated to others and directed to serve.

Our Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God, a fellowship of people who have been transformed by the wonderful saving grace of Jesus Christ and are committed to grow in and share His love with others.

We look forward to seeing God raise more eyebrows in our community and our world (in a positive way) through the many creative people and talents that will be used for our good and God’s glory.
